10-14, ICES SYMPOSIUM: ACOUSTICS IN FISHERIES
AND AQUATIC ECOLOGY, Corum Conference Centre, Montpellier, France. The fifth ICES Symposium on acoustics as a primary remote- sensing tool for accurate assessments of fish and plankton will explore recent advances and the expansion of acoustical methods into a broad range of environments. New analytical techniques, new technologies, and innovative acoustical implementations are changing the way we evaluate aquatic life. This ICES Symposium, the first on this topic to be held in the new millennium, will provide a unique opportunity for the international community to take stock of this rapidly evolving field.
The Symposium will be will be conducted in English, organized in plenary sessions. In addition, a number of poster sessions will be organized for contributions more suited to this method of presentation. 10-14, ASLO SUMMER MEETING: INTER-DISCIPLINARY LINKAGES IN AQUATIC SCIENCES AND
BEYOND, Victoria, B.C. Aquatic ecosystems are regulated by complex interactions among physical, chemical, and bio-logical processes. However, it is often difficult to develop novel linkages and robust predictions among these diverse disciplines. In recognition of this, the American Society of Limnology & Oceanography 2002 Summer Meeting will pro-vide a forum for researchers to highlight recent advances linking the various sub-disciplines within limnology and oceanography and to examine the potential for new link-ages with scientific disciplines that extend beyond the aquat-ic sciences. Special Sessions will be organized around four sub-themes:
Inter-disciplinary Linkages in Fisheries Science; Molecular and Cellular Linkages in Aquatic Sciences; Landscape Linkages in Aquatic Sciences, and; Linkages Beyond Aquatic Sciences. There will also be a workshop presentation on Alternative Careers in the Aquatic Sciences, where attendees will have the opportunity to explore employment in areas other than traditional academic research and teaching fields.
